Why arts and sciences?

Look closely at any tiny detail in our world — physical, social or cultural. Reflect on patterns, mechanisms, origins. Ask a probing question or two, then another. And discover a straight line to the arts and sciences! Why? Because the arts and sciences represent humanity’s deepest thinking about basic questions. And while the questions are basic, the thinking, assembled by generations of scholars, is too often remote or obscure to nonspecialists. Engaging with fresh eyes, an adult’s perspective, and the right guidance can yield an exhilarating, even transformative, experience.

Why a learning community?

The rewards of learning multiply dramatically through interaction with others — even a single conversation can produce striking insights. Learning communities activate and deepen such interactions. Members start to feel the “rhythm” of the community, which reinforces their commitment, participation, understanding, and enjoyment.

Why Semper Curious?

Semper Curious is a learning community for adults who care about ideas. It embraces the arts and sciences. It embodies a strong ethos of knowledge for its own sake. Semper Curious attracts members with active minds and busy schedules; and, through its offerings:

• sparks curiosity about a wide range of topics and phenomena

• demystifies complex or unfamiliar concepts

• builds coherent connections among ideas and fields of knowledge

• promotes probing discussions with peers and guest scholars

The goal is to provide each member with a series of stimulating experiences in the moment and well-integrated insight over time.
