In theory, there are plenty of resources available for the independent learner. But in practice, without the right materials and the guidance and support of others, the experience can be frustrating, unproductive — and not much fun.
For this reason, many inquisitive people pursue a more casual approach to learning. They consume articles and media, clicking links to follow a detail here, a name there, but without much thought to integrated understanding. This meandering approach may be fun, but often feels superficial and haphazard. And it is rarely effective for complex or nuanced subjects.
